Description

Hanham Hall is the first large scale zero carbon eco-village in the UK. It consists of 188 dwellings with a mix of tenure and size ranging from one to four beds.

Brief

EcoConsulting was appointed to work in conjunction with HTA, Arup, and Barratt Homes in delivering a Code Level 6. Solutions have to be practical, cost-effective, and carbon-neutral.

We advised the design team and client on general sustainability strategies and detailed considerations all of which are crucial on a development where over 90% of the available Code credits need to be obtained.

The development features a biomass CHP to meet 100% of the heating, hot water, and electrical loads of the dwellings. Very low mains water consumption were ensured through low flow sanitary fittings and rainwater collection—which are also used to irrigate the planting.

Achievements

Completed in 2013, Hanham Hall is England’s first large-scale volume house builder scheme to achieve the zero-carbon standard.
